Yes! youth are critical in nation building, they bring change by defining the destiny of a nation.
We cannot change the future of a nation without building our youths future, there is need to educate them and equip them for the bright future of the nation. The vision of our lovely land lies in their hands they are filled with tremendous dreams and ambitions. Their talents must be tapped for the benefits of our beautiful and beloved country.
The youths are indeed tomorrow’s decision makers and stake holders in miner and major development programs and projects that any nation will require to run efficiently and effectively.
Barrack Obama, one of president of United States, when on a mission and national duty when he visited Kenya as a sitting president once said that we borrow the future from our children and I want to believe indeed that the future belong the countries children and youth in particular.
One such big tool to equip the youth is education. For it is through education that dreams become possible more than even valid. It is in schools that talent are better tapped and natured, yes it is in school that people better discover who they are and who they want to be in life. There can never be a better and powerful gift we can give to our young ones right from the tender age, as a good education, it is the primary tool that we can use to equip them, to give the knowledge that is key to any particular success. My mother once told me that there’s nothing more important she could offer me than education, unfortunately she passed away while I was still acquiring it, I wish she could be alive to see how it is changing my life. When we educate our youth, we make them be aware of the challenges facing them; they will also anticipate future challenges and therefore face them like wounded Lion. We are living in a digital world, new discoveries are the order of the day, invention is happening around the world on each and every day and the pillar of above is good foundation in education. One of my school mate developed a modern chicken incubator. This machine is one of the best in its design; it helps in regulating temperature to a desired level until hatchery. Kenya institute of research and development (KARI) acquired this machine, improvised on it and is being used as a mode of study to other researchers and innovators in the agricultural sector.
Youth vision, hopes and aspiration must be well guarded and natured for a nation to achieve its dreams, some are aspiring to become engineers, others doctors, others sports personnel, scientist, environmentalist, musicians even world leaders among many other fields. How can a country hope to achieve when it cannot build capacity for its youth?
In the resent past we’ve seen effect of global warming. Degradation of our environment has become a critical concern among nations of the world all over. Just imparting and empowering the youth to prepare the future isn’t enough; the environment they operate in too, must be conducive. That’s why environmental education is important to every young man all over. Preserving of our natural habitat, the forest, water sources, and our museums, national and game parks among others is our responsibility. Cleaning of our villages and cities are also as important as the environment itself, advocacy for clean water, clean energy and many more. Destruction of any of the above will live us with dire consequences that we will live to remember. We must impart them with relevant values and altitude and skills so as they can develop a mind of environment conscious and become responsible for protecting, preserving and restoring it, so that the country will be in safe hands when they are in charge tomorrow.
Youth are also a force in solving social problems, it make me fill pain when I see our leaders making decision while sidelining the youths. The youth are the ones that led to fight for the end of apartheid in South Africa, the Mau Mau war in Kenya was incorporated by a number of many youths that led to delivery of our country from colonization, the maji maji rebellion in Tanganyika among many other fight to be freed from slavery and colonization. In today’s world, we majorly no longer fight these kind of war, but we are fighting war of illiteracy, good health for all, intellectual war of brain drain and corruption. Such matters can only be achieved by people, young men and women who are equipped to handle them. Women are suffering from their marriages, their husband abusing and beating them up and even injuring them. Such cases of abusing women in nature must stop, including female circumcision, early marriages, educating only the boy child while leaving out the girl child, all these needs an enlighten youth of a nation. They are the real change that the world needs. Many women suffer in silence from such kind of abuses; the young women are advised to keep quite more so those who are married for fear of breaking their marriages. These young ladies need enlightens to speak out openly about their predicament, they need to know their rights and advocate for justice without victimization.
In today’s African set up, politicians are using the youth to achieve their personal desires, they use them during time of campaigns to create violence and later dump them immediately they ascend to power, these are old retrogressive method that have no place in the modern society, tribal clashes in Kenya and other parts of Africa have been blamed for such reason for many years. It’s only a nation with empowered youth that will be able to overcome such challenges. Recently CECAFA which is the federation of football of east and central Africa youth of under seventeen years was won by Somalia, a country that has been all over the years faced with war, this was the first major cup that was won by such a country in football category, and is a sign that if we empower the youth, the positive impossible becomes possible.
People aged between 17years to 35 years have ability to bring change to the country, they have ability to convince their fellow youth on positive culture, they can lead a nation into one that is free from violence and crime. It is through young people’s campaign that Kenya today lives in peace and not pieces .Tribal clashes only appear in Kenya during electioneering period when politician with outdated agenda wants leadership, they don’t realize that the country has gain so much in terms of leadership, but instead of having a vision to better it they are only driven with their selfishness. Like in the last year general election, it was youth who held the country together by means of preaching peace through social media, like Facebook, twitter, watsup, instagramme and many other plat-forms. Where were the old religious leaders and the village elders? Nobody knows.
Kenya largest economic activity is Agriculture, youth have a critical role in food production, tradional method of farming which are still widely practiced and cannot sustain the country because of poor quality and low production. This is because of climatic changes .Kenya youth have demonstrated refined way of producing food due to their researching culture. This has led to improved quality and large scale production leading to food security and competiveness in growing quality sustainable safe products for consuming. This has been done by ravaraging rapidly developing technology like smart villages, digital farming, green houses and many more innovative strategies and equipment to cub climatic changes. They have also provided information on key policymaking on how to regulate farming practices, they have vast information on adaptation of different plants and animals to their invironment. They should be involved in key decision making for food stability of the nation. The major challenge they face is that land in Kenya belongs to elder people [their parent] who always control them on farming activities that should be done on their land. This limits their ambitions and in turn they end up doing repeatedly the same mistakes like their fathers too, because they cannot practice or try new ways and method of farming.
Youth have interprenuel culture compared to elder people in Kenya. The elder persons prefer being in employment yet for Kenya to develop, its only entrepreneurship culture that can drive it .This is the only catalyst that can stir our economy into prosperity as it reduces the rate of unemployment and idleness amongst million Kenyan youths, who after graduation roam hither thither in search of jobs which are few. The government should help by providing entrepreneurial education, trainings and even cheap loans to young people in order to realize the millennium developments goals and vision 2030 as Kenya has targeted to be developed.
Young people participation in a health services is one way of addressing quality and access issue through receiving feedback and implementing youth driven and health strategies. When youth are involved in a health programs it leads to improve developed and delivery of effective policies that boost the health sector. They are able to make right choices concerning their health by avoiding peer pressure that can direct them to bad behaviors like immorality cases and sex working. This in turn reduces sex transmitted diseases. Another benefit is that when they take good care of their hygiene it minimizes the spread unnecessary communicable diseases. It is also important for them to know methods of family planning, as the nation’s population must be controlled for better budgeting. Youth must learn how to take care of the already sick and disable, as some of them needs special care. This will boost the health care workers morale as they gain support from them.
Another advantage is that when youth control their health, it enables a decline in hospital congestion and spread of hospital acquired disease. This reduce government expenditure for provision of health services in a given country e.g. construction of hospitals.
Another point that nation’s future depends on its youth is that, youth plays important role in a countries politics and leadership positions. A Young politician will work for the benefits of all mankind; he/she can also represent them by giving them a voice by reflecting their ideas and aspirations within the political arena. Young leader too will advocate for jobs creation, positioning and empowering youth. In Kenya youth forms more than 75% of the total population. Most of them are disadvantaged by corruption. This continue to destroy Kenya, it does Kenya no justice. It is most practiced by old people who have refused to retire and fear that they haven’t collected enough wealth for themselves and their family.
Its youth only, who can reverts this, by developing action plans and draw strategies to stop corruption disease that is eating up Kenya. Youth should not be spectators of such programs but be part and parcel of finding a lasting solution. Most bazaars (public agenda discussions), are attended by youth who demands for transparence and accountability of the public funds. This has greatly reduced looting of funds meant for public projects. Youth are persistent, they follow up a case until justice is done, they advocate for equal distribution of public resources. They is urgent need to claim Kenya back to its glories, this can be catalyzed only if youth are involved. They have good leadership skills and always believe that leadership is about people and not rich few who think that, they are owners of Kenya with stupid believe that being successful is being rich and having a great power. No, it instead destroys ambitions of our young ones who are underprivileged.
In conclusion, youth are critical in nation building, they bring change by defining the destiny of a nation. Believe me they are the pumping heart of a nation, they can solve many of obstacles that hinder national development. They can positively influence others to work hard and smart in nation building. Yes, youth have ability to create a country’s identity; they are very ambitious and can move the nation a big mile. However, they will not be able to achieve this without the hands of their parents and government.
They should be assisted and they will make Kenya flourish and shine like roses shining in the bright morning with a sweet aroma.
