Yes! We need to be given the opportunities to learn from our mistakes no matter how painful they may be.
It is known that one cannot awaken a sleeping giant unless it is necessary. It may wake up into causing more damage than good. The youths of our times are the sleeping giants of great potential. They are sleeping yet they can be turned into something worthy. Their presence is just enough that it may lead to something wonderful.
I for one had a dream of growing up, shaking off the cocoon of childhood and face life squarely. I was ready to live up to my potential as a youth, with all the dreams to be fulfilled. Then the harsh reality set in. Most of the time as a youth I have stayed worried, worried about my education, my life, my financials, my talents and even my purpose in life. Life has always got its way of disapproving me.
I have always been passionate about writing, writing about anything I see and everything I feel. My passion seems to dwindle further and further as I go deep into youthfulness. It just becomes so difficult to deal with pressures of life unprepared and still manage to stay sober to follow my dreams and passion. Time has shown once and again that some of the lessons I am learning now should have been taught to me like several years ago, when I was still a teenager.
Dreams unachieved make us even more stressed. As a youth it has become so difficult to concentrate on life wholly. Each time a year passes by, the more difficult things appear. Nothing seems to make sense anymore. The more willing I am to work hard the more upsetting the system becomes.
The idea of writing a story or even a novel that no one is supporting me in any way is so unbearable. It is even more difficult being a writer in an African country. There are few readers who are not so much willing to contribute towards your creativity. Moments of opportunities are few and so much more difficult to find.
As a country, some of the youths in Kenya are known for their laziness in various fields and always looking for an easy way out of things. Who is to blame for that? The society has set to show the youths that no matter how passionate you are about what you love; in the long run your efforts will be disappointed. It has created that spirit of despair whereby the youths are no longer willing to go that extra mile. Their energy is now focused on the negativity. Crime and violence rates have been increased; this may be due to idleness or just a way to speak for the voiceless youths. In a nation made of approximately 40% youths and yet no one listens to their plight.
Even the leaders elected to represent them, some have gone past that age of being called a youth as their age speaks otherwise. It is with the same reason of an action-less nation towards the youth that has led to their lack of involvement in politics. They feel that politics will in way be of help in redeeming their status.
There are a smaller percentage of the youths that has managed to focus their energy in the right direction. These may be the flag-bearers of our nation in various capacities be it technology, sports, academia and even politics. This shows that somewhere down the line as the youths were stepping into young adulthood, some things were not done right to give them a stepping stone in life.
That said, as a nation we need to look for ways of building a stronger youth network as the continuation and development of the nation depends on the youths. This falls under the known fact that the growth of a nation depends on its posterity. Making of a strong youth will involve the wholly good health of a person in terms of mental, physical, spiritual health that will influence their character and decision-making. This can only be achieved if the nation pulls their efforts together in ensuring they give the best to the youths.
Proper education, this is not just the simple education of reading, writing and performance of arithmetic. It involves the making of a youth who is ready and willing to achieve her or his full potential in a field that they love and cherish. This kind of education should allow the youth to fully express themselves without fear of failing of being labeled a failure. It allows the youth to experiment to their wildest ideas of things they think and have in mind. It gives them a chance to prove the theories that were set earlier before them and learn of new things in the process. It allows the youth to easily match their talents and the discipline they are passionate about so as to maximize on their energy well.
Education should be able to inculcate proper virtues in the youths so that they are able to value life and appreciate people of different walks. Critical thinking can be absorbed from learning institutes and be applied in life compounded with decision making. These values will help in reducing the pressure faced by the youths as they will know how to cope with it. They will be in their best behavior when faced with difficult situations and dilemma even in their work places.
The killing of a malady-tribalism, studying together and playing creates that interaction among the youths that allows them appreciate the various differences they have. These may include races, tribes and even skin color. Education and school gives the chances of an existence of people of live in harmony without judgment by the tribe or race of one of them. They may make jokes and create stereotypes about the differences but even when push comes to shove in terms of tribe they are willing to stand by what is right. This will be a great way of reducing the fangs of a reptile that has threatened the existence of our nation to the very core. Tribalism in the youth is a bygone thing, though it is good to speak in the native languages but that hatred of one’s tribe had dwindled among the youth.
The political empowerment- this may need baby steps in order to achieve the full participation of the youths in politics. In Kenya youths have been known to be involved in politics during picketing and demonstrations. Their energy has been negatively been harnessed to induce pain, cause violence and chaos during campaigns and political rallies. Opponents have used the youths due to the idleness and unemployment. Some have even sold their votes just to cash in some money. Politicians who are supposed to help in creating the conducive environment of the youths are the ones who end up using them negatively and admonish them loudly in their rallies.
Creating slots for youths in various counties will help them achieve their dreams of becoming future leaders or as politicians say “leaders of tomorrow.” No elderly person should be chosen to represent the youths except offering pieces of advice on how to go about things. Instead of having the youths just as agendas in their meetings, they should be topics to be discussed at length in the bid to continue the future of the nation.
Politicians should not be allowed to use the youth in driving their agendas and plans home but rather help and mentor the youths who have their hearts in politics. There are a lot of untapped talent, ideas and energy of the youth lying out there wasting away. Student leaders in universities should be going to rallies held and sponsored by the elected leaders in the bid to train them to be leaders of substance who have the heart of service to the people. Those with dreams of joining the political arena some day in the future should be shouldered and shown the way instead of being trampled upon by the old doddering politicians who are so reluctant in letting the reins of leadership go.
The use of social media will trickle down to the individual upbringing of a youth; the values inculcated in them will determine how the youth will conduct his or her business on the various platforms. Some may use it to pour out their anger on people depending on who pisses them off. It may be used as a way to help them out. Some of the youths may also use the platforms to market their talents and skills and create business ideas. The use of social media by strong morally youths can be advantageous in terms of advancing their talents and creating a business empire with real-time customer viewing.
The youths should be morally trained to withstand any adversity in terms of erosion of culture and values. The internet will only then be of use to advance their skills, innovation, and improvement of technology and creation of new products. The moment the youths realize how well to use their access to the social media platforms perfectly it will be a major milestone covered.
With the youth’s abilities in play, it will take something even stronger to keep them going. As it is said, “Climbing to the top may be easier but staying at the top will require character.” The youths will need each and every virtue in play just to ensure a sane strong nation is built.
The youths need to be taught on the goodness of enjoying the fruits of their hard work. Being industrious should be awarded to help in creating that image among the youths. Values that increase the quality of life should be correctly imbued in youths to make them strong and ready to face what tomorrow might bring. Appreciating their efforts genuinely should be done, is it in music, filming or even writing industries. No piece of work should be looked down upon.
Encouragement of what they do will make them augment their efforts in delivering more in what they do.
The youths require tender care in terms of ensuring they will carry the nation forward rather than being stagnant in the same place. Even in churches, mosques and temples depending with the religion youths should be more involved. They should be criticized with how they do, shown what’s expected of them. They should be given that simple ability of existence to ensure that they thrive in future in each and everything they do. The continuation of the next generation rests entirely upon them. No amount of deniability can change that, they have to be taught how to do live life and enjoy.
In conclusion, we need to be given the opportunities to learn from our mistakes no matter how painful they may be. The efforts of the society should be visible in terms of much of an impact they make on the life of the youths. It should not just be a one day thing to help empower the youth but a continuous process that gives them the chance to practice what they know, what they learn and what to expect. Life will only give them one chance and without proper preparation as a nation we are bound to fail. The youths need to feel recognized in order to have the audacity of spitting their ideas of innovations; improvements, corrections and what they feel should be done. Their presence must be felt in different capacities of various fields.
It should be made possible for them to work and fulfill the requirement of the nation. To curb the problems that most the used cause due to poor decisions, there is need to improve their mental health in terms of ensuring contentment in what they do and self-belief. There is need to keep an eye on them to ensure the burning fire of the nation keeps on burning. As it is known it takes a village to raise a child, this will only stop after entry into adulthood.
