Humility is a state of bringing down oneself in terms of character and behavior, irrespective of how influential one is. Humility is a great virtue such that one could not claim to possess it not until you become rich, famous or dependent upon by relatives, friends, colleagues, etc. pride is something that had brought down so many talented, knowledgeable, famous and wealthy people. This is so because destruction goes with pride. Even we have read several times in the Holy books where powerful kings and warriors have been defeated and their kingdom taken over from them just because of pride. Their own pride comes in such a way that they see the servants under them as ordinary servants and therefore, do not always have something good to say. Because they are servants, they mean nothing to them and therefore, they are followed by destructions which ordinarily would have been prevented if they had listened to their subjects. No wonder Saint Augustine once said, “It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels”
Let us critically analyze the case of Croatia as a footballing Nation in this ongoing world cup tournament: Croatia came to this world cup with only two natural strikers (the ones expected to give them goals). Mario Mandzukic, the guy who scored the winner against England. The other was Nikola Kalinic. Kalinic was on the bench for Croatia’s first game against Nigeria. With five minutes to end that game, coach instructed him to dress up and replace another player. Kalinic angrily refused to play, in protest of being left on the bench.
He saw himself a top player, and wouldn’t come on for just five minutes. The coach turned to other player, pjaca for the substitution. After the match, Kalinic refused to apologize despite appeals from other coaching staff. The coach then sacked him from the team, and sent him home from Russia. Kalinic flew for holidays, and even posted pictures of him enjoying elsewhere. After all, he seem to imagine Croatia won’t go anywhere in the tournament. But without him, the team managed to win their matches.
The night against England, Croatia achieved their greatest football achievement in history, reaching the world cup final. The remaining 22 players are National heroes. Their names will forever be inscribed in the hearts of generations. Kalinic is not part of the winning team all because of minutes of anger, pride and bloated ego. He may have regretted now but it is too late.
Many of us are like Kalinic in the real life. The story above is quite familiar to us, but do we really learn lessons from them as they profoundly apply to all spheres of life? Learn to cut pride, learn to control anger and deflate ego. And ultimately, learn to say SORRY. Can Years of sweat and dedication be shattered by moments of anger and pride? Definitely Yes! What Kalinic as a footballer should have realized is that “True humility is staying teachable, regardless of how much you already know”. He was a very important player for the team but pride never allowed him get into the history book of the Country.
We should all be aware that we were once nothing and that whatever we might have achieved shouldn’t be enough to make us proud. The mere fact that you achieved so much in your career doesn’t mean so many haven’t done more than you did, but many might just be unfortunate. Getting at people with pride could really hurt them so much and makes them really feel bad about themselves and in the process might give up. We should also be wary of our arrogance because so many people might have even gone to commit suicide just because of an arrogance act pointed at them by you. Imagine a rich man having to talk to a poor man or remind him constantly of how poor he is. The poor man already going through depression from being poor might even go the extra mile of committing suicide because you as a rich man have done nothing than to add to his injury.
Lastly, we should all be aware that no matter who we are, where we come from, what we have, we are all perishable items and that the table could turn on any of us someday, thus, the need for everyone to be humble. When you attack people verbally or by any means because of the color of their skin, when you make people feel low because of the cloth you are putting on or because of the food you eat, when you make people feel they are not worth anything, then you are an arrogant person.
No one however in life in indispensable no matter how big you are. Report has it that “The ten richest men in the world in 1996 died ten years later as one of the world’s poorest men”. Instead of being arrogant because you have much, why not stay humble because some others have much more than you and that what you have can seize to be yours again in few minutes. When you continually think of this, humbleness will be your next neighbor.
Being granted more than enough is an opportunity to be humble and give willingly to others who aren’t as privileged as we are. When we seek to remain humble, we will be blessed beyond measures. In other way, when we think arrogance should be our game after we made it, then destruction wouldn’t be far from us.
